SAM WILSON
I'm more of a soldier than a spy.

OVERVIEW
What can be said about Sam Wilson? One could be that he never changed until that fateful encounter in the skies where he lost his partner Riley. After his two-tour stint in the Army, Sam was a different man. Though he pretended a view of a person who is easy-going, casual and very congenial to all, acquaintances and friends, Sam realized he could no longer go back into duty. He could not fight the way he always knew. He struggled to adjust to civilian life, putting the most of himself in his veterinarian work by helping others cope with their PTSD and other difficulties when returning to the comfortable world of civilian life. Compared to the superpowered elite that run around the world, fighting aliens and Nazis, Sam Wilson seems utterly common. For the most part, he kept his head low, trying to help people where he can, doing what he could. He never overextended himself or felt helpless by his own level of power and ability.

Then he met Steve Rogers. It wasn’t the most auspicious of meetings as Steve constantly outmatched him, but Sam took it in his stride. He displays no signs of hero worship or awe, treating Steve as he would anyone else and realizing that this was a fellow spirit — someone who grasped and understood the experiences Sam had gone through. Steve’s lack of knowledge certainly did not hamper their burgeoning friendship. Like Steve Rogers, Sam has an unwavering moral code, not one to ever sit by if he sees the world askew or a wrong being acted out in front of him. And Sam was instantly loyal to Steve once SHIELD came after him, not questioning their current issues and immediately grasping the situation Steve was in. Aware of government failings and not one to fall in line with a higher authority, Sam will always do what he considers to be right, irrespective of what anyone else may think. His loyalty and faith to Steve is not blinded by other factors such as the Captain America title or history, but in who Sam sees Steve as a person. That will always be what factors into Sam’s actions and ideals.

This is abundantly shown during Civil War. Without hesitation, Sam aligns himself with Steve not simply because they are friends but because Sam can clearly grasp Steve’s point of view. And even while he is on the run with Steve, he asks the question of Bucky’s innocence, free of bias. Despite the crowd he now runs with, gods and robots alike, does not mean his down-to-earth attitude has faded. In fact, it seems to remain strong, Sam always ready to bust out a caustic line in a hair-raising situation or able to call upon humour when things seem rather dire. He’s not a jokester or prone to quipping, possessing a strong sense of focus and determination that makes him an excellent fight but he’s willing to drop a line to lighten the mood even when things are grim. Even when he’s hurt, Sam is not one to hold onto grudges or make pointed comments, preferring to suss out people at his own pace and be rational when the worst happens. He can be petty at times, not moving when asked, but overall, he keeps a clear level head.

When Rhodey was shot down, Sam immediately dives for him, showing a extreme need to protect and save people, even for people who were currently shooting at him and even apologizes for situations that were not his fault, willing to be the bigger person. Taking the high road isn’t a way for him to prove himself or even a matter of pride. Self-aware of his own limitations, Sam has a good handle of pain and empathy and understands what people might need. He won’t sacrifice his own ideals for them, but he will put himself forward to help a person in their grief and sorrow. Even when people lash out at him, Sam will not budge, blunt and to the point with his words. He will not move to reckless anger or rage for his own sake. This is his own brand of stubbornness.

Now, Sam is on the run. Whether he can return to the US or not is still undecided. His life is up in the air and he’s a wanted criminal in the eyes of the law. And yet, none of that has daunted his personality and his strength, his steadfastness to his own code. Sam rarely budges, but he’ll run the mile for the people who might need him. Sam Wilson is the best person to have in your corner as he will do whatever it takes to look out for a person, always remembering the one partner he failed to save in the back of his mind.

PERSONALITY
Compared to the superpowered elite that run around the world, fighting aliens and Nazis, Sam Wilson seems utterly common. Having done two tours of duty and losing a partner, Sam retired from the army, putting his efforts into helping others integrate into society. That being said, he also faced the same difficulties, unable to fully put it behind him and it shows from his constant level-headed approach and his ability to keep calm even in the most unusual or improbably circumstances.

Like Steve Rogers, Sam has an unwavering moral code, not one to ever sit by if he sees the world askew or a wrong being acted out in front of him. Staunchly in favor of the little man and leery of authority figures, Sam Wilson tends to question instead of simply falling in line, though he’s always cautious about the way he presents himself. While he is no saint, Sam is self-aware of his own limitations. Instead of letting that hinder him or give him a self-esteem complex when he is surrounded by Gods and heroes, Sam continues to take things as they come, doing whatever he knows he is able to. Despite his sensible world-view, not bound by cynicism or optimism, Sam isn’t one to take the easy way out as proven by staying by Steve’s side and helping the Winter Soldier.

That being said, nothing says he can’t have a sense of humour, often quite blunt or cheeky in the most grim scenarios. It doesn’t matter if he’s talking to the King of Wakanda or Steve Rogers, Sam treats everyone the same, preferring to make his own impressions, taking his own time to suss people out. He’s not one to hold grudges though he can be wary, not always willing to trust people as easily as Steve would. Unflinchingly loyal to a fault, Sam Wilson is the best person to have in your corner as he will do whatever it takes to look out for a person, always remembering the one partner he failed to save in the back of his mind. He is no longer the kind of person who can sit back and watch, powerless.

ABILITIES
Sam is a normal human being with no special abilities / magic / powers. He is an expert marksman and expert combatant. He is an excellent pilot, heightened by his ability to use the Falcon Suit and strong acrobatic abilities. All of which have come from training.
